Catherine's Mentoring Helps William's Historic Craft Come to Life
RICHMOND guitar maker William Hancock’s unique skill-set is penetrating the Melbourne music scene – one handmade string at a time.
Another gun graduate of Sarina Russo Entrepreneurs, William is a luthier whose-self-titled business, William Hancock Guitars, is enhancing his reputation as the go-to man of guitar making.
For the uninitiated, a luthier builds or repairs string instruments consisting of a neck and a sound box. Historically, luthiers made flutes, but the craft includes makers of stringed instruments such as the violin or guitar – and, in William’s case – the thom.
Crafted from native blackwood, eucalyptus and western red cedar, the thom William made for South Sudanese Gordon Koang almost stole the show this month when the blind musician went live across Melbourne’s 3RRR radio.
William’s business acumen also reached new pitch after he completed the New Business Assistance with NEIS program under the mentoring of Sarina Russo Entrepreneurs Box Hill Business Solutions Coach Catherine Bragagnolo.

A thom consists of metal strips attached to a wooden soundboard and played with the thumbs and Catherine said William’s unique craft was instrumental in his business’s success.
“Being a guitar-maker, it has essentially been a big year of building networks and creating contacts and William’s amazing craft is really starting to be recognised across the Melbourne music industry,” Catherine said.
“William’s work with Gordon is a wonderful acknowledgment of his drive and commitment and I am extremely proud of his success and to have mentored him though the New Business Assistance with NEIS program.”
