Yoga Creating Freedom on the ‘Inside’
A STAR graduate of the New Business Assistance with NEIS program at Sarina Russo Entrepreneurs is helping Brisbane’s female prison population deal with incarceration through yoga.
Sonia Brown-Diaz, founder of Yoga On The Inside, has been appointed to oversee a 10-week trial program that will see every woman incarcerated at a Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre given an opportunity to attend a yoga class.
The program which commenced on October 6 and will run for 10 weeks is modelled an identical program that is undertaken by female prisoners across the United States.
Turn Your PASSION into a PROFITABLE Business!
Sonia, herself a survivor of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and severe psychological trauma that followed the devastating loss of her still-born twins 15 years ago said her business model had proven beneficial to prisoners across the US.
“The results suggest yoga is an inexpensive intervention that benefits both prisoners and officers by reducing some negative behaviours and possibly mental health problems,” Sonia said.
“Yoga On The Inside’s focus is to provide individual or group yoga classes to people who are experiencing, or have experienced, significant difficulties in their lives by providing another avenue or method.
“I started practising yoga about three years after the loss of my sons in 2003 but I wasn’t diagnosed with PTSD until about three years ago.”
